Following the unification of the Xiongnu tribes by Modu Chanyu – aka Mete Han or Bagatur – in 209 BC, the new steppe empire attacked on all fronts. In the east of Mongolia, the Xiongnu warriors were personally led by Modu and defeated the Donghu tribe in 177 BC. This collection of Mongolic families was then effectively displaced forever and took refuge east of the Khinggan mountain range, between Mongolia and Manchuria. As Modu became the Supreme Ruler of the Steppe, the Donghu entered a process of regeneration. In time, they would make a comeback and take revenge upon the Xiongnu and their allies – 500 years later, with the formation of the Rouran Khaganate.
